Not shying away from the more technical he discusses the ontology of propositions, facts, states of affairs and events. Loux has nice discussions of universals, particulars, propositions, possible worlds, causation, time, and the challenge of anti-realism. Contemporary metaphysicians have gotten interested in rejecting the Quinean belief that metaphysics is about what there is with the Aristotelian and Kantian assumption that metaphysics is about what grounds what.

This new edition also keeps the user-friendly format, the chapter overviews summarizing the main topics and examples to clarify difficult concepts. Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction

Loux begins by explaining the nature of metaphysics as ontology, after which the book goes on to give detailed accounts of the problem of universals in two chaptersproblems involving the nature of concrete particulars, propositions, possible worlds and modality, and finally the problem of identity over time.

He does drill into rival views, though I’m more surprised by what he doesn’t discuss. The main opponents to this way of philosophizing, and to which the author feels obliged to respond to, are the ‘conceptual schemers’. Introduction to ‘Contemporary Aristotelian Metaphysics’.

Loux is a clear writer who sympathetically and systematically highlights the important debates in contemporary and some historical metaphysics. I haven’t had the opportunity to metaphyslcs with any textbooks in contemporary philosophy in-depth, but I’ve been disappointed in my brief interactions with them.

Of course, this is no fault of the book, since this has occurred in the past years. This new edition also keeps the user-friendly format, the chapter overviews summarizing the main topics, concrete examples to clarify difficult concepts, annotated further reading at the end of each chapter, endnotes, metaphysixs a full bibliography.

His book Substance and Attribute is one of the major metaphysics books of recent years. My only real criticism of this book is that it over-simplifies some of the historical figures. The reader will gain a working vocabulary and a base from which future study in metaphysics will be greatly aided.

I very much doubt this argument works. Wherever possible, Loux links contemporary views to their classical sources in the history of philosophy. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. As someone primarily interested in the history of philosophy, this mefaphysics a bit annoying, but I don’t think it would bother the primary audience of this book.
