Nevertheless Erickson does not glorify nor glamourize the Red Army. Even battles are described in mostly arid bland institutional language that could well have been used to describe how one branch of a cosmetics company sold more shampoo than a competitor did.

The living drama that unfolds in the latter chapters is worth the effort. The worst of his cronies was perhaps Voroshilov, who opposed mechanization of the armed forces, but hohn ultimate blame was Stalin’s; like a local mufti, he hoped to buy off Hitler with gifts, and continued to deliver raw materials to Germany even after Operation Barbarossa was launched against the USSR.

Erickson was writing for military professionals who are intimately familiar with the political and military course of the War in the East and who sought a then-groundbreaking synthesis of Soviet military records that Erickson gained access to in the 70s.

His accounts of the diplomatic erivkson between Soviet and British leaders are particularly great, giving you a clear picture of everyone’s agendas and motivations before taking you into the smoke filled rooms to witness the big decisions being reached.

I find good maps greatly enhance a military history work and in particular a book like this really needs them to further tto the sheer scale of this conflict.
