Some of the poems in this collection were new to me I will posms forget that it took me two days to finish ‘Kaddish’ due to its sheer power and some I’ve read before, but all in all, this is a book for the shelves. He also talks about other members of his family and events that surrounded his life with his mother, such as the Great Depression. References to this work on external resources.

However, when you place those early poems alongside Kaddish and Other Poemsas Penguin has done in this Modern Classics edition, they somehow take on an deeper, more spiritual Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems is a book I’ve read over and over again, and while I appreciate its importance, I’ve also grown annoyed at how strongly it expresses the conventional beatnik idiom.

There are some good recordings of him performing these poems on youtube, if I remember correctly. I struggled with deciding whether to give this collection 3 or 4 stars, but decided on 4. I was stirred by Ginsberg’s poetry in corners of the mind I’m not wholly comfortable around – it was an His experiences are so exquisitely described but of such a sad and disturbing nature that you feel very confused as a reader, you feel the nostalgia, the pain, the suffering and the hurt as well as disappointment for children who deserved better, even writing that I feel guilty towards his mother.

This has been on my reading list for some time after seeing it under a list of fifty books to read before you die and they weren’t kidding.


I was surprised to end up by giving this one a “five”. Widen the area of consciousness.

Published February 26th by Penguin Classics first published Not a lot of punctuation or structure, extremely raw form of writing. It has a ooems middle, but it goes back up to perfect after this. InGinsberg moved to San Francisco. The traditional Kaddish contains no references to death, whereas Ginsberg’s poem is riddled with thoughts and questionings of death.
