I get what others say about it not adding to the overall plot of Pern May 14, Erik Akre rated it did not like it Shelves: This is the story about how one boy takes it upon himself to reestablish contact with these intelligent beings. Aramina was a character that I never really liked, but one that I felt sorry for. McCaffrey’s favourite characters from Benden ect do make a token appearance to wind up one plot thread, but I think McCaffrey loved them too much to ever completely leave them out, they are not central at least.
I wish they could have been reintroduced earlier. Oh I guess I’ll try it; and you buy it So you’ve read enough fantasy literature and taken enough trips to the bookstore to browse around and see what the genre has to offer.

A number of people realize practically simultaneously that the “shipfish” of Pern are actually dolphins who travelled from Earth with the first settlers.
Readis wants to play with the dolphins but Mccaffreu refuses to let him. Paperbackpages. With this backdrop we focus on the second part that is also history I really enjoy going back to Pern.

Instead, Readis decides to remain in his cave and be a dolphineer with the pod who bring him a bell from the wreckage of one of the ships sunk in the First Pass. Alemi will not help Readis as he does not wish to go against Aramina, but T’lion, unaware of Aramina’s objections, perrn keen to assist Readis, and the two look into getting an “aqualung” constructed. The ending does seem to be a bit sudden but that might be me mccaffrdy more of the dolphins and less of the Toric situation but it’s a lovely ending with the dolphins and Readis finally being recognised.
Alemi then travels to Monaco Bay with the help of T’liona young bronze rider who conveyed him to Landing initially. No dividing line, no gradual drop off in quality, just one book that’s great, and the next book isn’t worth reading.
I like the dolphins almost as much as I like the dragons and that is saying something.

Following annr, the dolphins’ sonar ability is tested on several patients by Persellanthe Healer at Eastern Weyr who even ends up treating an injured dolphin who is brought to him for treatmentand Master Oldive at Fort Hold.
This book is parallel to The All the Weyrs of Pern in that it takes place in the same time frame. Eight turns later, many things have changed on Pern, including the addition of generators to several major Holds, a change in the Harper Hall ‘s methods of teaching, and several specialized dolphins’ diagnostic Healer marinas have been established.

The holders succeed in repelling the would-be immigrants, returning them to the Northern Continentand realize they can get the dolphins to track and identify the unauthorized ships. But that was Mel’s interpretation and I soon adjusted.
It’s written in McCaffrey’s usual style that actually makes me comfortable while tue about the problems the characters have mccaffrrey overcome. This novel concentrated more on the Southern continent and a small number of settlements and people there so there was less repetition than was starting to creep in to many of the latter books in the series.
That’s pretty much it! Dolphins were brought with the first settlers, and were an integral part of society. The book right before this one, “All the Weyrs Of Pern” was fantastic and startling and different and beautiful. Definitely don’t read it if you have never read any of the Pern books and want to view spoiler [The tactic for winding up Readis’ plot line was predictable, repetitious and incredibly unnecessary.
A fantastic addition to this series. Did i enjoy the dolphins? I also enjoy Readis as a character.
